In accordance with the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 (SB 359), Alhambra Unified School District has adopted a fair, objective and transparent mathematics placement policy. The information provided below gives details regarding math course sequences, course descriptions, and placement rubrics. 


Middle School Placement: The California Common State Standards (CSS) aligned course sequence for middle school students are: Math 6, Math 7, Math 8.
 
High School Course Sequences/Flowchart: This chart identifies possible math sequence options that students may follow beginning in grade 9 at the secondary level.
 
Course Content Descriptions: This document is an excerpt from the course catalog for Alhambra Unified School District that itemizes and describes the content of every math course offered at the secondary level. Honors courses are generally considered more challenging, require more time outside of class, and may be eligible for an +1 extra GPA point (per University of California guidelines).
 
Secondary Math Placement Rubric: In accordance with the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 (SB 359), Alhambra Unified School District systematically takes multiple objective academic measures of pupil performance into consideration for placement.  In addition, a placement checkpoint assessment in the first four weeks of school permits for a re-evaluation of individual student progress.
 
Math Placement Parent Appeal Form: In accordance with the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015 (SB 359), Alhambra Unified School District has provided clear and timely recourse for each pupil and his or her parent or legal guardian who questions the pupil's placement with this Parent Appeal Form.
 
Changes to a Student’s Recommended Placement: Prior to any change in a student's recommended placement, both the student and parent/legal guardian will be counseled on the impact of any proposed change in placement. The Parent Appeal Form can be used to request placement above or below the recommended placement.
 
Please be advised that the process for math placement is based on a detailed review of student performance in several areas that may include but are not limited to placement exams, state testing results and class grades. Proper placement of students is crucial to their success both emotionally and academically in math. For this reason, the appeal waiver does not guarantee a change in math placement.
