San Gabriel student places fourth in country for cartooning

Congratulations to Cassandra Chen for placing fourth in the country in the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Cartooning Awards for Comic Strip/Panel. Cassandra, who is a junior at San Gabriel High School and features editor of The Matador, received a plaque for her work. The Matador newspaper staff also earned an Honorable Mention award in the NSPA Design of the Year Awards for Page One Newspaper Design (top ten in the country). Cassandra also earned an Excellent rating in the Journalism Education Association’s National Write-offs for Editorial Cartoon in an on-the-spot competition.

Cassandra, along with Editor-in-Chief Kristy Duong and adviser Jennifer Kim, travelled to Washington D.C. in November for the award ceremony, competition, and a four-day journalism convention. The Matador staff would like to sincerely thank sponsors Alhambra Educational Foundation, San Gabriel PTSA, AUSD Educational Services, and the numerous teachers, staff, newspaper alumni, and townspeople who helped make this once-in-a-lifetime trip happen. The knowledge gained from the trip will strengthen the publications program at SGHS and the newspaper and yearbook it produces for the community.
